«12-13 November 1943!! Kleidi is also known as «Ciano» battery. Its officers were artillery lieutenant Antonio lo Presti and second lieutenant Ferrucio Pizzioni, both of whom were executed by the Germans, immediately after the fall of their battery. The siege begun with the 1st Battalion landing in «Vagia». Five hundred grenadiers climbed from the gulf of Kryfo up to Vigli, also known as “vendetta”. The battles were fierce and the losses great. Casualties amounted to 357 English, 164 Italians and 246 Germans. One battle, one war, fought on a foreign land. In this, now quiet and calm scenery, the souls of the departed still wonder, why they had to die so young».
