DESCRIPTION

The Greek-Italian Association of Friends of Leros was established in 2009. Its activities are aimed at helping and encouraging foreign residents, from Italy and other countries, who reside in the island mostly on a temporary basis, to get acquainted with the language, and aspects of the history and customs of the island of their choice, which have, in some way, piqued their interest.

The 26 founding members were all Italian. Two years after the General Meeting of 2011 the association had 133 subscribers, and, more recently (on 1 January 2016) it had reached 239 regular members, more than half of whom are Italian and one quarter of whom are of other nationalities, mostly French speaking.

Activities:

  • cinema festival
  • cooking lessons
  • traditional dance workshops
  • Greek language lessons for foreigners and Italian language lessons for Greeks
  • conferences
  • painting & photography exhibitions
  • concerts
  • sailing races
  • thematic, historical tours (retracing the Italian fortifications of the island)
  • book presentations

Many of these activities have been taken on tour around many parts of Greece and Italy, in an effort to promote the island and the history of the presence of Italians on the islands during World War II, as well as to strengthen the ties between the people of Greece and Italy.
